Why stroke order is not fussiness
Written in the standard order, a character comes out balanced almost by itself, because the order is built around the shape. Written in your own order it will look subtly wrong in a way that is hard to diagnose. The order also drives handwriting recognition on phones and dictionary lookup by stroke, so getting it right early saves relearning it later.
Top before bottom
And left before right. Those two rules cover most of what you will meet.
Across before down
In 十 the horizontal comes first, then the vertical through it.
Close the box last
In 国 the sides go first, the inside next, and the bottom stroke shuts it at the end.
